Primary School

Aspirational opportunities for all, through the breath of God

Music

Our aim at St George’s is to provide a broad and balanced musical education. Children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. We are committed to developing a love for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of music. Through a progressive and enriching curriculum, children are empowered to develop a real appreciation and understanding of a wide range of music.  Teachers deliver inclusive lessons which allows our pupils to access the music in a fun and engaging way, further promoting a love of learning.

We use Charanga to plan lessons in a well structured, knowledge rich sequences to provide children with the opportunities to review, remember, deepen and apply their understanding. The elements of music are taught in classroom lessons so that children are able to use the language of music to dissect it, and understand how it is produced, played, appreciated and analysed. There are opportunities to perform, learn, listen and appreciate music at every step on the educational journey of the children at St George’s.

All pupils will learn about music using the following threads:

  • Singing
  • Pulse and Rhythm
  • Composition
  • Musical Appreciation
  • Notation
  • Listening
  • Performance
