English has a pivotal place in Education and in society. At St George's we ensure that our high quality teaching allows pupils to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others, and through their reading and listening others can communicate with them.
Reading in particular allows pupils to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. Literature plays a key role in this development, as such our topic planning always links a key text into the teaching unit. Through this method we cover a range of genres and authors throughout each year group. Reading enables pupils to acquire knowledge and to build on what they already know. The foundations of reading are taught through the Read, Write Inc and pupils progress onto the Accelerated Reader scheme which keeps their enthusiasm and stamina for reading high. We know St. George’s CE Primary School pupils gain a great deal of enjoyment from having the Reading Dogs on site. The dogs have quickly become an essential part of life at St George’s and are now enjoying their own celebrity status. The introduction of Reading Dogs to our school has provided many benefits to our setting supporting young readers, our more vulnerable pupils and other members of our school community.
These dogs give unconditional acceptance, as they are non-judgmental, which is especially crucial to struggling, emerging readers. The listening canines also provide confidence to children as they do not judge them when they read, but above all they make amazing listeners, providing the children with a sense of comfort and love. At St. George’s children who read to these dogs demonstrate an increase in reading levels, improvement in word recognition and a higher desire to read.
